GO-KART GRAND PRIX 1999

Yes Virginia… Jacques Villeneuve may one day win again…
Most people spend their Sunday mornings engaged in quiet contemplative rituals...The Sunday paper...A nice pot of freshly brewed coffee aromatizing the home...French toast...You get the picture. I myself generally enjoy a nice espresso with my wife while we watch a videotape of the Howard Stern Radio Show from the previous night.
But once a year, the closet racers in our club are called to arms and asked to don their racing helmets and demonstrate their skills... or emulate their favorite Formula One driver.
And so it was that a group of 30 or so Michael Schumacher wanna-bees descended on Euro Karting on De La Savane to participate in what is seemingly turning out to be an annual event. Luckily no" rave" party took place on the premises the night before, and those of you who were there at last year remember the delays that it caused. But no!!... The place was all ours to enjoy, and in no time we were on the track and ready to go. In order to maximise track time, practice and qualifying took place within the same session. And it went as smoothly as the track that we were on. Once done, the pack was divided in to four groups of equal calibre. And the race was on. Nothing eventful in the first race, other than Yves L'Ecuyer getting lapped about a half dozen times. Maybe Yves should bring his newly acquired BMW motorcycle next time and give us a run for our money in that. The second race was marked by a nice three car pile up on turn one courtesy of Daniel Baragiotta, Sisto Gaetano and of course me. And don't feel so bad Yves, yours truly got lapped five times. The third race proved to be quite trying for Paul Sauvé (looking sharp in his black racing suit). It seems that the extension on his pedals kept coming loose from the kart's vibrations. The final race proved to be very entertaining, after all they were the fastest bunch. No sooner had it started, we were witness to the sibling and father-son rivalry of the Mayo clan. I must mention at this point that congratulations go out to Patrick Mayo for beating the track record of 21.75s by setting the fastest lap at 21.66s.
Thank you's are also in order to Luc Martin and Reynald Mayo for a well organised and flawlessly executed event. Once over, it was time to catch our breath and get over the dizzying (or intoxicating) fumes. Some us retreated to the Cote-St-Luc Rotisserie for lunch. Others went home. And for some of us... Sunday is not complete without that traditional bowl of pasta...buon appetito e buona Domenica!
