DEJEUNER SUR L'HERBE A OUTREMONT
BRUNCH AT OUTREMONT PARK
by Bob Forest (your
roving reporter)
September 12th, 1999 was the annual classy event of the Dejeuner sur
l'herbe at Outremont Park. Three tents were set up, and in the background
a very professional sound system, playing 30"s to the 60" music. Not
too loud, just perfect for a nice sound, that did not interfere in
discussing our love affair with Classic Cars.
Gilbert Bureau, with his impressive 1926 Cadillac Custom Touring "314"
was the first to arrive. Then myself with the MGA and on arrival members
of the VAQ were on hand to greet us and give us directions on were
to park our cars.
I must say, that this location is a beautiful one. Many large trees
for shade, a beautiful pond with a water fountain in the middle. One
very important facility, the washrooms are nearby on the grounds.
Seeing that facility means we can eat and drink with piss oh I mean
peace of mind.
This year, there were fewer cars, which did not take away the pleasure
of our day. I think the reason for this, is that the clubs do not
send out to each other their events. If the events were sent at the
beginning of the year we could do a mailer of that particular event,
if it did not clash with one of ours. It would make an extra outing
for our members. This particular event was a perfect example. I hope
next year we will see an improvement on communications between clubs.
The mixes of cars were all there. American, British, French, etc.
There was a Packard that had to be seen to be believed. It was just
beautiful. You could not hear the engine running.
What I found nice about the event, was, the cars were not parked 2
feet close to each other. We had large areas around our cars, so the
backdrop that was given to the cars could not be beat. It brought
out the beauty of the Classics.
Some had beautiful picnic set ups, with the straw baskets, the beautiful
and in some cases elegant dishes, all laid out on a colorful blanket.
All this with the music playing in the background. What more could
you ask for.
Many members of the VEA were there. There was also Gilles with his
just finished TR 3A, as he had just finished the car, a few problems
showed up, but as I told him, this was a normal procedure of getting
the car back to 100%. He had to be push started at one point getting
to the park. His starter would not work. We looked to see if we could
find the trouble. Guess what, it was a loose fuse that had come out
of its holding place. So we squeezed the clips, put back the fuse,
and voila, the car started. That was one happy camper.
A new member with his beautiful Series One E type Roadster. What makes
this car extraordinary is that all is original except the paint. It
has never been restored. It is one beautiful machine.
Gerard was busy taking pictures of some of the members cars to add
to our web site, which by the way, for you who have the internet should
visit at (www.vea.qc.ca) This is a must see. It is one of the finest
if not the best web car club site available.
If I missed some that were there, I apologize and will make sure the
next time I see you at an event, will write your name in Capital letters,
which will be twice as noticeable.
When it came time to give out the awards, Tom Merson and his friend
and I were discussing that the days of running around doing judging
events were days of the past. Now we enjoy our cars, and drive them,
without the worrying of getting them dirty. Then we hear Gilbert Bureau
announcing the winners in the different categories, the Youth Choice,
which was Helen's MGA, and the Mayors Choice which was Tom Merson
Bug Eye. Was Tom excited; he jumped like he won the Million Dollars.
Is there a meaning to this last paragraph? Yes there is. Negative
selling always works.
I would like to thank Gilbert Bureau, for his effort on holding this
event. You all have to realize that it takes time to organize an event.
It is we owners that benefit from all this work. We drive the car
to the event, then sit, eat, talk cars, enjoy the scenery and just
have one fantastic day. With no effort on our part. I say it now,
it is important for us members to attend these event, to encourage
the organizers, so that we can continue in the future to have some
place to go and enjoy looking at Classic Cars.
