BORGWARD (Germany) 1939 - 1961
Karl F. Borgward was 73 when he died in 1963, his large car works had closed
down two years earlier.
Forerunners of his Borgward cars were the Hansa,
Hansa-Lloyd and some other makes, which he either founded or bought when
the former manufacturer of car radiators was on the way up.
The first model
bearing the Borgward name had an ohv four-cylinder 1498cc engine; the next
cars were of 1758cc and there was also a diesel-engined model.
The popular
Borgward "Isabella" was built from 1954 in various models with ohv 1493cc
four-cylinder engines. Borgward also competed in sports car events with
1493cc ohc cars. The small-car ranges were built under the Lloyd and Goliath
trade marks and when the Bremen works disappeared, these makes also became
victims of the collapse.
